Three-piece can bodies are made from flat sheets cut from coils of tin-plated steel with a protective coating depending on the end use. Decorations may be printed on the body or added as paper labels to manufacture printed or plain cans.
The process
The slitter cuts sheets into body blanks.
Body blanks are rolled into cylinders and the seam is welded.
A side-seam stripe protects exposed metal inside, outside or on both sides according to the end use.
The coating is cured in an electric oven; cylinders are flanged and may be necked in.
Ends are attached with a double seam to form a secure seal.
Finished cans are checked for leaks and stacked on pallets for storage.
